How to Delete Telegram Contacts (One by One or in Bulk)
Updated July 2026
Telegram quietly syncs your phone's address book, so over the years your contact list fills with old colleagues, one-time marketplace sellers, and numbers you no longer recognize. Here's how to delete Telegram contacts on every device — single contacts, the whole list, and the sync setting that keeps re-adding them.
What Deleting a Telegram Contact Actually Does
Before you delete, know what happens:
- The chat history stays. Deleting a contact does not delete your conversation — that's a separate action.
- They are not notified. The other person gets no alert and can still message you.
- They may lose sight of your number. If they could see your phone number because you were mutual contacts, they lose that visibility.
- Your address book is untouched. Deleting a Telegram contact does not remove them from your phone's contacts app — but sync can re-import them (see below).
Delete a Single Contact (iPhone & Android)
- Open the chat with the contact (or find them via Contacts)
- Tap their name at the top to open their profile
- Tap the three-dot menu (Android) or "Edit" (iPhone)
- Choose Delete Contact
On iPhone the option sits at the bottom of the edit screen in red. On Android it's inside the ⋮ menu on the profile page.
Delete a Contact on Telegram Desktop
- Open Telegram Desktop and click the contact's chat
- Click their name to open the profile panel
- Click the three-dot menu in the top-right of the profile
- Select Delete Contact and confirm
Delete Many Contacts at Once
Telegram's official apps only delete contacts one at a time — there is no multi-select on mobile. Two workarounds:
1. The hidden "sort and prune" screen (mobile)
- Go to Contacts and sort by "Last Seen"
- Work from the bottom — accounts "last seen a long time ago" are usually dead
- Delete each via the profile menu as above
Tedious, but safe: you see exactly who you're removing.
2. Stop the source: disable contact sync
- Settings → Privacy and Security → Data Settings
- Turn off Sync Contacts
- Tap Delete Synced Contacts to wipe the copies Telegram keeps on its servers
This is the step most guides skip: without it, Telegram re-imports your address book and deleted contacts creep back.
Contacts Are Only Half the Clutter
A messy contact list usually comes with a messier chat list — dead groups, muted channels, and bots you tried once. Deleting contacts doesn't touch any of that.
Tools like Prunegram handle the chat side: they scan your account, flag inactive groups, dead bots, and scam channels, and let you leave or delete them in bulk. (Prunegram works on chats and groups — contact deletion itself stays in Telegram's settings, as above.)
Finish the Job: Clean Your Chat List Too
After pruning contacts, run a free Prunegram scan to see every dead group, bot, and muted chat hiding in your account — then clear them in bulk.

Will the person know I deleted them?
No. Telegram sends no notification. They only notice if they check whether you're still in their "mutual contacts."
Does deleting a contact block them?
No — they can still message you. To stop that, open their profile and choose "Block User" instead (or as well).
Why do deleted contacts come back?
Contact sync. Turn off "Sync Contacts" and use "Delete Synced Contacts" in Privacy and Security → Data Settings, or Telegram will re-import your address book.
